Blog Entry 1: Technology Access at My School

In my opinion integrating technology is essential for educating today's youth. Our students have grown up in a world of Hi-Definition, there is no alternative for them. I become frustrated then when I realize how far behind some school systems are in terms of obtaining technology and training in order to meet the needs of our learners. This is definitely the case in my school. I am almost finished with my Master's program in Instructional Technology so I feel that I have become very familiar with how to use technology in my classroom. My only limitation is a lack of resources. This is not my school's fault. The school I am out does very well, we meet AYP and we are a choice school for many parents in the county. However, I have 30 students in a classroom and computer labs with only 25 working computers. As far as I know we only have one smartboard in the school and that is in a computer lab that is used more for professional development than student instruction. I am one of the lucky teachers at my school and I have a projector. I love my projector, I'm very grateful to have it and I use it everyday. Sometimes I just feel very limited with what I have. I can't wait for the funding to be in place for our school to be able to afford the great technology that we have now and the great stuff that I know is in the very near future. I don't see how it can be anything but positive for our students.

  1. Many teacher feel your frustration. We have a little more technology in my building; however, the problems we have is in lack of sufficient training. I plan to work on that when I finish my specialists degree.

  2. I can understand your frusttration, only from a different angle. At my school, we have TONS of technology available to us, yet much of it goes unused. It is very frustrating, especially after I read your post and see how much you would love to have all the stuff we have. It sounds like you might end up being a pioneer for technology use at your school! That's awesome!
